Spot Lies on Resume: Efficient Hiring PART VI

People are always encouraged to lie in the interviews. A 2023 study by ResumeLab uncovered that 70% of job seekers lied at least once in their CVs or cover letters. However, even what seems to be a little white lie can be a great financial risk for the company. And in part VI of efficient hiring, we are going to discuss how to spot if the candidates are lying in their CVs.

Why and what can you do about it?

The main reason behind those lies is the desire to stand out from the crowd and be noticed. Hence, things like responsibilities, the number of people managed, metrics and accomplishments, and even the whole company or position can be made up or exaggerated, according to the same study.

This creates a huge mismatch between the idea of a candidate and the reality, which can sometimes seep through during the interviews or reference checks. And a recruiter must catch these inconsistencies early on, preventing the candidate from going to later stages of the hiring process.

There are many ways a recruiter can catch the lie, with a general rule of thumb being to double-check all the information on the CV. There is no way to prevent the candidate from lying, hence, the recruiter should thoroughly analyze all the details described in the resume. Possible things that can be studied are: previous company website and management contact information, social media, especially LinkedIn, degree, and qualification.

The best way to do a background check is an extensive analysis of the candidate’s cover letter and CV in comparison to the job interview and references. However, this may take a long time, prolonging the time the position is open and, possibly, damaging the business.

How to identify skill mismatch using Talantly.ai?

Talantly.ai, an advanced hiring solution, allows recruiters to easily identify such a mismatch by analyzing all the supporting documents of the candidate presented in the hiring process. Then, it shows any discrepancies between the candidate’s claims, which a hiring manager would have spent hours finding.

The “Mismatch search” can be found in the candidate card in the top left corner, which allows you to choose one of many reports Talantly.ai can provide about the candidate. However, in order to achieve maximum results, a mismatch search is only available if two or more documents are uploaded to the candidate profile.

Mismatch search is conducted using the following parameters:

  • Aspect: a requirement that has been indicated in a vacancy
  • Claim: candidate’s experience of a lack of it
  • Source: a document where the experience was mentioned
  • Mismatch details: analysis of why there is a mismatch between the requirement and the experience
  • Relevance: how relevant the mismatch is to the job, with only mismatches with 60% of relevance or more showing

Conclusion

It is true that a person can easily learn to adapt to any job if it is something they really want. However, businesses want professionals, and a big mismatch can create a great gap between reality and expectations. That’s why it is crucial to catch those mismatches early in the hiring process and be aware of them throughout.
